New Gas-Powered Macan Back On The Table As Porsche Rethinks EVs:Porsche Macan: Porsche is considering a new internal combustion engine (ICE) Macan, which may use the same platform as the Audi Q5.

Porsche is reevaluating its all-electric future, considering the introduction of hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) variants for models that were originally intended to be electric. This shift is driven by uncertainties in the electric vehicle (EV) market, prompting the brand to rethink its plans. One potential outcome is the release of a new ICE-powered Porsche Macan, which could share a platform with the Audi Q5.

Although the Porsche Macan EV, which debuted last year, has been well-received—selling 18,278 units in Q4 2024 alone—the volatility of the EV market has led Porsche to explore other options. Insiders suggest that Porsche is contemplating the addition of a gas-powered Macan to its lineup alongside the all-electric version.

Lutz Meschke, Porsche’s Chief Financial Officer, confirmed the company’s shift in strategy, acknowledging that some models initially planned as EVs might be offered with hybrid or ICE alternatives. He emphasized Porsche’s continued commitment to combustion engines for the foreseeable future.

The possibility of an ICE Macan revival has garnered attention, with sources indicating that Porsche executives are seriously considering bringing back the gas-powered version. This would be part of a broader strategy to explore a variety of product scenarios.

Despite the positive reception of the Macan EV, Porsche remains cautious. The company’s concerns about the stability of the EV market were amplified by a significant 49% drop in sales of the Taycan, which has seen its demand wane in recent months. While the introduction of the updated Taycan model is partly to blame for the sales slump, it has raised broader questions about the long-term sustainability of the EV market.

The Macan, which has been a key pillar of Porsche’s success since its debut in 2013, has sold over 500,000 units globally. While the ICE Macan was removed from Porsche’s European lineup in April 2024 due to cybersecurity regulations, the model continues to be available in other markets, including North America. The possibility of an updated version could help boost sales and potentially reintroduce the Macan in Europe.

If Porsche reintroduces the ICE Macan, it could follow in the footsteps of Audi, which has launched an updated ICE-powered Q5 alongside its electric Q6 e-tron, both utilizing the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture.

The decline in Taycan sales has led to a scaling back of EV production, with Porsche even considering moving production away from its main Stuttgart factory, a decision that could have implications for employment. While Porsche had once set a goal of EVs making up 80% of its global sales by 2030, that target now appears to have been quietly adjusted.

In addition to the Macan, Porsche is developing a fully electric Cayenne, expected to arrive in late 2025 or early 2026. However, the company has pledged to maintain the availability of ICE and hybrid versions beyond 2030, offering customers more options. Meanwhile, the electric successor to the 718 family has been delayed due to the bankruptcy of battery supplier Northvolt, meaning the lifecycle of the aging 718 Boxster and Cayman could be extended. These models have seen a rise in sales, with a 15% increase in 2024, signaling their continued popularity.
