2026 Subaru Outback, with Hybrid Power and SUV Looks, Is Worth Waiting For

 Overview

Once the quintessential station wagon, the Subaru Outback has always offered a blend of rugged appeal, making it attractive to buyers who may not fully test its off-road potential but appreciate knowing it’s available if needed. The upcoming 2026 Outback is set to shift its design towards a more traditional SUV look, with larger proportions and an exterior that reflects this change.

Why It Matters

The Outback has long been a strong performer for Subaru, but its sales have dipped slightly in recent years. This has largely been due to the rising popularity of the smaller Crosstrek and Forester models. To maintain its sales momentum, Subaru appears to be refreshing the Outback for 2026 to reinvigorate interest.

Platform

The Subaru Global Platform (GPD), introduced less than a decade ago, supports most of the automaker’s U.S. lineup, from the Ascent to the Impreza. It’s highly likely the 2026 Outback will continue using this successful platform, despite potential updates to its powertrain or exterior design.

Powertrain

A hybrid engine option is almost certain, especially considering that the 2026 Forester is expected to get one as well. For non-hybrid options, Subaru is likely to offer the familiar flat-four engines, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged. The 182-hp 2.5-liter and 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter engines found in the current model are strong candidates, but Subaru typically makes subtle adjustments to keep the lineup fresh. Regardless of the engine, all-wheel drive will remain standard.

Competition

The Outback has a unique spot in the market, as it lacks a true direct rival. While models like the Audi A4 Allroad and Volvo V60 Cross Country offer a similar wagon design, they come at a significantly higher price point. On the other hand, many similarly priced alternatives fall into the mid-size SUV category and lack the Outback’s more relaxed, wagon-like charm.

Potential Risks

The Outback’s success has been partly due to its balanced size, familiar design, and approachable vibe. Subaru risks alienating its loyal customer base if it strays too far from these qualities in its redesign.

Arrival and Pricing

The 2026 Outback is expected to debut in mid-to-late 2025. Pricing should remain close to the current model, which starts around $30,430.
