 Mercedes May Be Developing New S-Class Coupes, Trademark Filings Suggest


Recent trademark filings in Europe indicate that Mercedes-Maybach could be working on a new lineup of S-Class coupes, potentially as part of its exclusive Mythos series. The trademarks, registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), hint at two distinct models that could mark the return of the luxury coupe body style.


Possible S-Class Coupe Variants


Two Registered Community Designs (RCDs) have surfaced, appearing to be linked to a partner organization rather than Mercedes itself. The first design showcases what seems to be a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class coupe featuring the front bumper of an S63, with Maybach-branded wheel caps and an AMG badge on the rear decklid. The second filing depicts what appears to be a Maybach S680 coupe, notably distinguished by a split-design rear window. Both trademarks are set to remain valid until January 8, 2030.


A Potential Revival of the S-Class Coupe


When Mercedes-Benz introduced the W223-generation S-Class, the automaker announced the discontinuation of both the coupe and cabriolet variants. That decision was implemented a year after the model’s debut. However, these newly discovered trademark applications suggest that Mercedes-Maybach might be reconsidering its stance, possibly reviving the ultra-luxury two-door format.


Connections to Previous Limited-Edition Projects


Interestingly, neither of the trademarks was filed directly by Mercedes. Instead, they were registered by Robu Aktiengesellschaft, a company previously linked to exclusive Mercedes-based projects. Notably, Robu filed a trademark in 2021 that led to the creation of the Bussink GT R SpeedLegend, an ultra-rare Mercedes-AMG GT R variant built by HWA AG, a longtime Mercedes partner.



Given this history, these recent filings could signal that Mercedes is preparing to introduce high-end, bespoke models under its Mythos program. Announced in 2023, the Mythos series aims to position Mercedes closer to ultra-luxury brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce by offering highly exclusive, limited-production vehicles.


Could These Models Be Part of the Mythos Series?


The first official Mythos model, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, was unveiled as a roofless SL63 with Formula 1-inspired design elements, boasting a top speed of 196 mph. Limited to just 250 units globally, it set the tone for the type of ultra-exclusive vehicles Mercedes aims to produce under this program.


If these trademarked designs indeed materialize into production vehicles, they could mark the return of the S-Class coupe, this time as a high-end, ultra-luxury offering within the Mythos lineup. While Mercedes has yet to confirm any official plans, these filings certainly suggest something exciting may be on the horizon for luxury coupe enthusiasts.
